Hundreds Of Emaciated Sea Turtles Baffle Texas Experts

Hundreds of malnourished marine turtles stranded in Texas, perplexing scientists.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported a big rise of loggerhead sea turtles on the Texas coast this year.

282 turtles, most of them dead, washed ashore between Calhoun and Kleberg counties between April 1 and August 19.

"This is more than twice the average annual number of loggerhead strandings recorded from 2012 to 2021," said Donna Shaver

This year's dramatic increase in loggerhead strandings has STSSN participants in the Coastal Bend on high alert for the influx of comatose turtles needing rescue and care.

Loggerhead sea turtles are the most numerous in U.S. seas, but industrial fishing gear threatens them.
