It may sound like a smart idea to choose a 150-calorie Coke over a zero-calorie diet drink to reduce added sugars in your diet, but doing so could really be detrimental to your long-term health. And scientists think that synthetic sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, or Splenda could be a factor. In a recent study published in Cell Metabolism, Yale researchers investigated this phenomenon. They discovered that drinking a diet beverage sweetened with sucralose together with a carbohydrate—basically any meal—reduced insulin sensitivity. So, according to senior author Dana Small, professor of psychiatry and psychology and director of the Modern Diet and Physiology Research Center, consuming diet Coke with a meal can affect your brain’s reaction to sugar and even sugar metabolism.
